AI content generation tools are growing to become commonplace, but are they worth using?

Content marketers and techno optimists have been blown away by the power and potential of AI-based content generation systems in the past couple of years. Today, any user can feed a prompt to these conversational AI platforms and generate hundreds to thousands of words on any topic they desire.

If you want to maintain an active blog and optimize for search engines, this should sound appealing to you. Not only do you have practically infinite amounts of content to generate, you could pay very little to do it.

But should you be using AI to write new content?

The Strengths of AI-Generated Content

AI tools do have a lot of strengths when it comes to generating content. They work incredibly quickly and for little to no money. They can scour the entire web and accomplish more research in a few seconds than you can in an entire day. They’re also remarkably good at consolidating that information and generating original content, though ultimately, this content is merely a regurgitation of material that’s already been written. If you have tedious, repetitive content development tasks to execute, such as creating similar landing pages for each of 100 different cities, AI is excellent.

The Weaknesses of AI-Generated Content

However, there are many weaknesses of AI content generation to recognize as well. For starters, AI doesn’t have a personality; its sentences tend to be bland and uniform. Also, AI is capable of generating truly original thoughts. Because it can only reproduce what it finds on the web, it’s incapable of moving conversations forward or producing truly innovative content. Intelligent and experienced users can easily tell the difference between content that was written by a human and content written by an algorithm.

So what’s the answer? To put it succinctly, AI content generation tools are very impressive and good for some tasks, but if you want truly valuable, innovative content, they’re nowhere near sophisticated enough to give you what you need.
