The art of writing for SEO has changed dramatically over the years, but these five easy tips illustrate how to write great content consistently.
Writing for SEO has come a long way. From the early days of stuffing as many keywords as possible into a page that scrolls to infinity, constant search engine algorithm updates and refined copywriting practices have slowly molded SEO writing into a craft that takes skill and experience.
Today, the most important factor for any content marketing program, including content for SEO, is readability. How many people want to read this content? How many will enjoy reading this content?
That being said, these five rules demonstrate a basic rubric that should be followed when writing for SEO:
1.      Start a conversation. Your writing shouldn’t be flat or one-sided. It should be an open invitation for your readers to engage. Get people talking to each other, and make them feel like they have an active role in the piece.
2.      Make it matter. Your content has to matter to someone. Otherwise, why would anyone read it? Take the time to create topics of true value to a wide audience.
3.      Keep it punchy. High quality writing is important, but that doesn’t mean you should get long-winded. Keep your content concise, as in 3-500 words, and include subheadings and bullet points to keep your reader interested.
4.      Once is enough. Keyword stuffing is long, long, long dead. Don’t try to jam your keywords of choice into an article more than once. Feel free to use a keyword in multiple articles, but don’t spam it in a single piece.
5.      Watch your voice. Who are you writing to? Imagine your target audience as a person, sitting across from you as you write. What tone do you want to speak to them in?
