Before you start building a new website, there are some things you should know first.

If you’ve never built a website before, the process may be unfamiliar to you. If you already have a website—perhaps one you’ve built yourself—and you know it’s in need of an upgrade, you might be similarly unacquainted with modern standards for web design and development.

So what should you know before you start shopping around for web developers?

  1. You get what you pay for. First and foremost, you get what you pay for. It’s true that you can use a free website builder and free themes to build out a website quickly by yourself—but you won’t be getting anything unique or well-adapted to your brand. High-quality design and development work isn’t cheap—but it makes a much better impression.
  2. Facelifts aren’t always possible. If your site is built on old web standards, it may not be possible to give it a “facelift.” It’s better for the usability of your site—not to mention its security—to upgrade it to the latest standards.
  3. Usability is key. You and your team will be the ones responsible for the daily upkeep of your site, such as adding new blog posts and introducing new products. The design of your site is important, but so is the back-end functionality.
  4. Experts are experts for a reason. In most cases, it’s better to trust the experts. Designers and developers with years of experience have built their careers on creating effective, functional websites. Listen to their advice, and be sure to ask lots of questions.
  5. Good things take time. It’s possible to accelerate design and development if you’re truly in a rush, but it’s not ideal. Good things take time—at least 6 to 8 weeks of time for a basic website.
