Creating content that serves its purpose—whether that purpose is converting visitors or simply informing them—requires skill and attention to qualities that work.
No matter what function it is serving, you can think of your content as a gate. Users will walk by this gate, see it, and either enter the gate or continue walking. Your goal, as a content marketer, is to get those people to enter the gate.
The “gate” in this metaphor can represent any goal—usually that goal is to get the user to venture deeper into your site or buy a product. But the illustration works in almost any context.
In order to get your visitors to cross that gate, your content needs to successfully demonstrate the following qualities:
· Concise. First and foremost, you content needs to say things in the shortest way possible. Extended, drawn-out explanations are not near as useful as a single, compact comparison or illustration.
· Short. Shorter is always better, especially at the beginning of your article. Use short titles, only a few words, and start off your article with a handful of short, punchy sentences.
· Direct. Don’t beat around the bush. People are smarter these days, and wiser to verbal tricks. Be as direct as possible with your readers.
· Informative. Your content needs to inform above all else. Even if you have a catchy tagline, it won’t matter unless it tells the reader something about your product.
· Trustworthy. People will only acknowledge content they trust. Use facts, statistics, and a rhetoric ripe with Ethos to build that trust with your readers.
