Not all SEO agencies are worth the money.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most profitable marketing strategies available, but it isn’t a guarantee of success. It’s a complicated field, and an effort-intensive one, so most brands interested in optimization seek the help of SEO agencies to provide them with direction and ongoing support.

This is usually a good move; SEO agencies are more efficient and more experienced than the typical business owner, and they have the power to scale with you as your needs grow. But some types of SEO agencies simply aren’t worth the money—even if they’re cheap.

These are types of agencies to be avoided at all costs:

  1. Link schemes. Some agencies, rather than helping you build and earn links, will simply place links on your behalf, or engage in link schemes to provide you with backlinks. Link schemes of any kind are always a bad idea. A link scheme will typically earn you a penalty, doing more harm than good.
  2. Agencies that promise immediate results. It’s exciting to think that you could reach the top of the SERPs in a matter of weeks, but any agency promising you this should seem suspicious. It takes months, sometimes years, for a strategy to fully develop, and because every business is different, it’s almost impossible to predict exactly how those results will grow.
  3. Cheap agencies. Cheap SEO agencies may seem like a good deal, especially when compared to more experienced agencies that cost thousands of dollars a month. But in the SEO world, quality is everything. If your content is poorly written, if your site is lazily coded, or if your links are sloppy and irrelevant, it’s going to hurt more than help.
  4. Agencies with no track record. Everyone has to start somewhere, and there are probably SEO agencies and consultants out there with little formal experience who truly do know what they’re doing. However, it’s a good idea to exclusively work with agencies that have a portfolio of proven results.
