Some SEO tactics don’t work as well as you think they do.

Everyone in the SEO industry feels like they know what they’re doing. But this isn’t always the case. There are some tactics that can provide decent short-term results, followed by a significant penalty that reverses your momentum. There are also some tactics that look good on paper, but that ultimately fail to help you reach your full potential.

The truth is, some tactics just don’t work – or at least, don’t work as well as you think they do. These are some of the most common:

  1. Keyword stuffing. Keywords and keyword phrases used to be the keystone of any SEO strategy. Then the Hummingbird update of 2013 completely changed how Google handled queries, utilizing semantic search. These days, keywords are still important – but if you stuff them indiscriminately into your blog posts, or if you use keywords without considering their relevance to the content that surrounds them, you’re going to be disappointed.
  2. Blind link building. You need links to rank higher in search engines. Links function as a kind of authoritative vote, making your site seem more authoritative in the process. But if you use this information as justification for spamming links or building links without an overarching strategy, you’re probably just going to get penalized. You need to be focused and deliberate in your efforts.
  3. Creating more pages. If you want a page to rank for a specific keyword phrase, just create a new page for it! We’ve met lots of people who think this way. But a new page alone won’t be enough to get you there – you need high-quality content and link building to make this work.
  4. Stuffing stock images. Images are good for SEO, so it only makes sense to download a bunch of images and use them throughout the site, right? Yes and no. Images can be a valuable tool, but if you’re only using stock images and you’re not using them well, it might work against you instead.
