If you aren’t considering the mobile crowd in your email marketing campaigns, it’s time to reevaluate your strategy.
The Latest Statistics
Over the first half of 2012, a new study has evaluated the current scope of the email market. Studying 12 major industries, the research demonstrated that more than a third of all email messages were opened on mobile devices—in this context, “mobile devices” refer to phones and tablets. This marks a rise of 20 percent from 2011.
Mobile Email Future
Over the next six months, the number of mobile email openings is expected to climb to over 50 percent of all email openings, at least for most brands. This means that by the end of 2012, half of your customers are going to be seeing your emails on a mobile device, rather than a home computer.
Why It’s Important
You may be thinking “Okay, that’s neat. But how is that relevant to me?”
First, the design of your emails will need to always be optimized for mobile devices. If you aren’t already doing this, you need to start immediately. If you only send out emails that are optimized for a full computer, you could be alienating half your audience with ill-fitted designs and an image of not being up to speed with modern technology.
Second, many users check their email on a mobile device when they’re on the road, or are in a hurry. With the ever-rising prevalence of mobile devices, users are going to spend less and less time in front of a dedicated screen, and more time only reading emails on the go. Attention spans are already dwindling, and this development could mean you have even less time and space to capture your audience’s attention.
