Are PPC ads always worth the money?
Pay per click (PPC) ads have been an incredibly popular marketing strategy for more than a decade now, offering a relatively simple yet globally accessible platform that small businesses and mega corporations alike can use to reach new audiences.
The idea is simple. Post an ad. Target people based on the keywords they search or based on their demographic qualities and interests. Then pay an amount of money for those ads based on the number of people who click them and the number of competitors bidding against you.
In its best form, this is an easy way to attract tens of thousands of new people to your website inexpensively. In its worst form, it’s a total waste of money.
So when are PPC ads worth the money?
These are just some of the scenarios.
When You’re Willing to Do the Work
PPC ads can work for almost any business in almost any situation, as long as you’re willing to put in the work. That means working to better understand your target audience, working to avoid your top competitors, working to lower your cost per click (CPC), and working to optimize your ads for engagement. With enough refinement, you will be successful, but this does take a lot of time and energy.
When You Have an Open Niche
PPC ads also make sense for any business with minimal or nonexistent competition. If you’re in a blue ocean space, with few if any competitors, the cost for your advertisements will likely be very small, justifying any amount of spending you make competently.
When You Need to Build Momentum Fast
Many cost-effective marketing strategies take a long time to develop, making them ill-suited for businesses that need to build momentum quickly. For these applications, it’s hard to beat the speed and accessibility of PPC.
When Your Profit Margins Make It Worth It
Your PPC campaign will almost always be effective if your conversion rates and generated revenue are high enough. Imagine a scenario in which 10 percent of your visitors make a $50,000 purchase; it’s hard not to justify even the most expensive conceivable ads here.
