Your content is well-researched, polished, and tailored for your target demographics, but is it shareable?

If you haven’t given much thought to the shareability of your content, now’s the time. Content marketing is only getting more competitive, and cranking up the shareability of your material could be the way to get the edge.

Why Shareable Content Matters

Shareable content is any article, infographic, video, or other content medium that lends itself to sharing on social media. Sharing is especially powerful since it has the ability to cascade; if your initial audience earns you five shares, each of those shares will introduce your content to a new selection of followers. Each of those selections may share it further, and so on, until it reaches tens of thousands of new readers. Sharing is also a gateway to earning more links and establishing your brand reputation.

What Makes Content Shareable?

So what makes people want to share an article in the first place?

These factors are all heavily associated with shareability:

  • First, it needs to be easy for your readers to share your material. Including share buttons at the bottom of your article for one-click sharing is an optimal solution.
  • Relevant topics. You also need to write on topics that your audience cares about. If you aren’t sure, conduct a survey or do more market research to find out.
  • Information and/or entertainment value. The best content offers new information, entertainment value, or preferably, a bit of both.
  • Shock value. Surprising your readers can make them more likely to share your material. Make sure you offer something original and surprising, whether it’s a research stat or an unexpected twist.
  • Conversational material. The more conversations your piece sparks, the further it’s going to be shared. Don’t be afraid to strike up a debate or some controversy to get a few extra shares and the visibility that comes with them.
