More content is usually better, but can you have too much content for your site?

If you’re pursuing a content marketing strategy, you might get the sense that more content is universally better. After all, each new article on your site is another page for Google to index, another opportunity to impress your customers, and another place to include a call-to-action so you can improve your conversion rate.

Accordingly, many marketers scramble to get as much content live as possible, sometimes opting to publish a new post every day to keep pace. But is there a disadvantage to having too much content?

The Problems With High-Volume Content

Generally speaking, more content is better, but there are some potential downsides to publishing content too frequently:

  • Quantity over quality. The biggest danger is letting your focus on volume eclipse your focus on quality. If you’re desperate to knock out 10 posts a week, those posts probably won’t be your best work, and your reputation might suffer as a result.
  • Reader disinterest. If you publish all the time, especially on social media, eventually your readers will become disinterested. Having one cool thing to look forward to each week keeps readers coming back, but a new post every day can get tiresome.
  • Topic exhaustion. If you start popping out several posts each week within your target niche, you may start exhausting most of your material prematurely. Soon, you’ll resort to esoteric topics fewer people care about, or rehashing already-finished articles with no real benefit.

So what’s the better option? Make sure all the content you produce is as well-researched and well-written as possible, no matter how frequently you publish. If you can maintain a high level of quality throughout the process, feel free to publish more often, but quality should always take precedence over quantity.
