Competition is a problem in SEO – but it doesn’t have to be.
Most businesses practicing search engine optimization (SEO) eventually have to deal with competition. You may have excellent onsite posts, solid links, and an excellent overall strategy, but if a rival business does just a little bit better, they’ll rank ahead of you.
What can you do about this?
Essentially, you have two options.
Target a Different Niche
First, you can try targeting a different niche. Depending on your goals and what you’ve already done, that could mean targeting a slightly different demographic, appealing to people in a different geographic area, or focusing on a subset of the broader population.
This is a kind of competition avoidance strategy, as it allows you to bypass the typical problems associated with “brute force” competition. However, many businesses are reluctant to adopt this approach because it means reducing the size of their target audience.
Do What They Do, but Better
If you’re ready to tackle your competitors head on, be prepared to do whatever they do, but better. To succeed here, you’ll likely need a bigger budget, more time to allocate to the project, and more resources.
Still, you can trounce your competitors with the following:
- Focus on more valuable keywords. Dig deeper into your research to find keywords that your competitors have neglected. Chances are, there’s an abundant trove of high search volume and low competition keywords that you haven’t covered yet.
- Write better content. Cover topics in more detail. Offer more research and original insights. Write in a more authentic way. The better your content is, the better it’s likely to perform.
- Build more links. Pursue more links for your content. Copy whatever links your competitors have, then build some extra of your own.
- Promote more aggressively. Work to promote your content as aggressively as you can. Use marketing and advertising to get it in front of more people (within your target demographics, of course).
