Most people claim to desire productivity, but instead, they focus on staying busy.
Are you staying productive in your work as a marketer?
Or are you just staying busy?
Some of you reading this are confused, thinking that “busy” and “productive” are actually the same thing. While similar in nature, there’s a big difference between being busy and being productive – and it’s important to recognize the distinction.
Busy vs. Productive
Being busy simply means that your time is occupied. You’re in a meeting. You’re doing data entry. you’re writing an email to a client. No matter how valuable the work you’re doing is or what results you’re seeing, keeping your time occupied means you’re staying busy.
By contrast, being productive means you’re using your time efficiently to achieve your primary goals, whatever they happen to be. Occupied time only “counts” if it leads to meaningful advancements.
As a simple example, if a person spends three hours in a meeting where nothing is really accomplished, they can be considered busy, but not productive. If a person spends 30 minutes writing a blog post that attracts 15,000 new visitors, they can be considered productive, but not busy.
How to Be Productive, Instead of Just Busy
It doesn’t take much analysis to figure out that being productive is better than being busy. So how do you optimize for this in your marketing team?
- Foster an ROI-centric mindset. In marketing, your biggest priority is return on investment (ROI). You need to apply this concept to your work as well; you should strive to get the most value out of the fewest possible hours.
- Stop stuffing your schedule. There’s nothing wrong with having extra time at the end of the day. Stop stuffing your schedule full of meaningless meetings and unnecessary endeavors.
- Cut time waste. Critically examine the work you do and question its value. If you have the right mindset, you can probably cut hours of wasted time every week.
- Incorporate tools that improve efficiency. Get more done in less time. Use automation and convenient tools to assist your manual efforts.
