Choosing keywords for your SEO strategy can be hard, but it’s much easier with these strategies.
One of the most important ingredients for success in search engine optimization (SEO) is choosing the right keywords for your strategy. Your keyword targets will determine how much traffic you potentially receive and how much competition you face along the way.
The exhaustive approach to keyword research and keyword selection is the most effective. You’ll thoroughly research the landscape of keyword terms related to your industry, brainstorm new terms with SEO keyword research tools, then choose a selection of keywords based on their traffic volume, relevance, and competition. However, this can be intimidating, time-consuming, and expensive for new business owners.
Instead, you may rely on one of these “quick fix” strategies for choosing target keywords:
- Business type and city name. First, you could target the type of business you run in combination with local keywords. For example, Quez Media Marketing is a marketing firm in Cleveland, Ohio, so historically, we’ve targeted terms like “marketing agency Cleveland,” “marketing firm Cleveland,” and “marketing firm Ohio.” There are a lot of synonyms you could hypothetically target here, and none of them are bad choices. You may also have the potential to play with your industry terms, experimenting with different topics and approaches.
- Products and services. If you already have a website, you probably have dedicated pages for your most common products and services. For example, you might have pages dedicated to “leather boots,” “hiking boots,” and “work shoes for men.” You can use each of these as a solid keyword term in your SEO campaign. Just make sure you’re including synonyms as well.
- Competitor terms. If you have major competitors in the area, consider looking at their websites and blogs. What keyword terms seem to be the most common there? Which terms are they ranking for? Use these are a jumping-off point; you may not want to compete with them directly.
