Everyone knows that high quality content and backlinks help build SEO authority, but what about these seldom-known factors?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is always changing, and for the most part, always becoming more complex. With every Google update, there are more and more factors that influence a page’s rank, so it becomes more difficult to stay on top of modern SEO standards.

The fundamental pillars of SEO are still the same: producing regular, well-written content, and establishing natural backlinks on external sites. However, there are dozens of small factors that can also influence page rank. Check out some of the most relevant below:

1.       HTTPS. Recently, Google announced that websites with HTTPS encryption would get a small ranking boost over pages without it. While it currently doesn’t affect many search queries, chances are that Google will continue to boost its significance.

2.       Site speed. The amount of time it takes to load your site is also a ranking factor. You can improve this by reducing the size of the images on your site and cleaning up your site’s caching system.

3.       Grammar and spelling. It’s not enough to have well-written content. It needs to be proofread and professionally submitted.

4.       A clear sitemap. Google’s web crawlers need to be able to easily read your sitemap. Otherwise, you could suffer a ranking drop.

5.       Terms of service and privacy pages. Having these two pages on your site lets Google know that you are a trustworthy source.

6.       Mobile optimization. Make sure your site is optimized for mobile—if it’s not, Google will notice, and you’ll drop a handful of ranks.
