Use these key strategies to save a failing content marketing campaign.

Content marketing campaigns are set up to provide you a steady stream of growth, gradually building up your domain authority, referral traffic, organic traffic, and recurring visitors as more people are exposed to your content.

So what happens if you hit a snag, and your growth rate appears to stall? Thankfully, there are some key strategies that have the potential to help your campaign recover:

  • Identify the root cause. First, use your analytics dashboard to identify one or more root causes. Did you stop investing in new resources and further development? Did you apply a controversial new change to your approach? Is there a new competitor siphoning traffic from you?
  • Conduct surveys. Ask your audience what they think of your strategy through surveys. Chances are, they’ll be able to point out one or two things that require improvement, and may suggest topics and points of development for the future.
  • Review the competition. Take a look at what your competitors are doing. You don’t want to copy their strategy or content style directly, but you can use them to learn more about what your target audience truly wants.
  • Assess your complementary strategies. How are you using complementary strategies, such as SEO and social media? If you aren’t currently using them, now’s the time to start. If you already are, try to find new ways to improve your performance.
  • Retarget and redraw. With the above insights, take your current content marketing approach and break it down. Rebuild it from the ground up if you have to—keeping things the same will only yield the same tired results.
  • Test, test, test. Measure everything, and pay close attention to how your new changes are affecting your campaign. If they work, keep them. If they make things worse, ditch them. It’s that simple.
