Generative engine optimization could be the next generation of SEO.

If you’ve read our blog or if you have any familiarity with digital marketing at all, you’ve probably heard of search engine optimization (SEO). This is a strategy designed to help businesses rank higher in search engines, so they can generate more organic traffic and ultimately more sales.

However, now that generative AI is taking over both search results and user behavior, search optimizers are being forced to adapt with new strategies. One of these critical new strategies is generative engine optimization (GEO), but how exactly does it work?

What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative engine optimization is a subset of strategies within SEO designed to help business owners take advantage of AI generated search results. You can see examples of these AI generated results with almost any informational query; selected snippets and answers are pulled from websites or generated from scratch, then placed above the fold in organic search results.

How can you increase the likelihood of your content and your brand being visible in these AI results?

Key Strategies in GEO

In addition to following best practices for SEO generally, consider working these tactics into your campaign:

  • Answer common questions. Write content designed to answer questions that you know your users are searching for. This is going to greatly increase your relevance and make your brand visible in a broader range of queries.
  • Include more objective statistics and metrics. Google and AI systems love to see numbers. Including more objective statistics and metrics in your work can help you increase your authoritativeness.
  • Cite all your sources. Similarly, it’s important to cite all your sources when stating facts, including statistics, or making strong claims. Explicitly state where you got your information and include a hyperlink.
  • Write clear headers and subheaders. Properly organized articles are much more likely to be selected for generative AI search results. Accordingly, you should write clear headers and sub headers, and include bulleted and numbered lists in your work.
